Cyprus Welcomes Tourists To Underwater Archaeological Park

Cyprus is now home to the world’s first-ever underwater archaeological park. Visitors can don swimsuits and dive deep into the sea to have a glimpse of history. The archaeological park features the eastern Mediterranean’s well-preserved ancient harbour. It lies off the ancient city-kingdom Amathus. The harbour was constructed between 312/311 B.C. and 294 B.C.This was the time when the two successors of Alexander the Great were in conflict with each other for the accession of Cyprus.

Well-Preserved Underwater Archaeological Site

Historians believe that the narrow entrance of the harbour is an indication that it was constructed as a naval base. But experts say it was probably used for commercial and military purposes at that time. According to a report by Reuters, this is one of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. The French archaeological team excavated this site in the 80s. Divers can witness the historical harbour, turtles and other fishes swimming around underwater. It’s a breathtaking experience.
